What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease (also called periodontal disease) is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. In the early stage of gum disease, called gingivitis, the gums become red, swollen and bleed easily. At this stage, the disease is still reversible and can usually be eliminated by daily brushing and flossing. In the more advanced stages of gum disease, called periodontitis, the gums and bone that support the teeth can become seriously damaged. The teeth can become loose, fall out or may have to be removed by a dentist.

What are the symptoms of Gum Disease?

Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not know you have it. If you notice any of the following signs of gum disease, see Woodgrove Family Dentists immediately:

  • New spacing between teeth (caused by bone loss)
  • Loose teeth
  • Receding gums (loss of gum around a tooth)
  • Tenderness or Discomfort
  • Gums that bleed when you brush your teeth
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Bad breath that doesn't go away

How can you treat Gum Disease?

Have you had your teeth cleaned in the last six months? Brushing and flossing greatly help for healthy gums and teeth, but over time, dental plaque and stains build up on teeth and gums. If regular cleaning is not done to remove this plaque, plaque can build between the teeth and gums resulting in gum disease.

When treated early, gum disease is easily treated and reversed. If left untreated, you will need additional care to restore your oral health.

Root planing and scaling, also known as ultrasonic cleaning, is one of the most effective ways to treat gum disease. During this procedure, our dentist will remove the built-up plaque from your teeth, then smooth your tooth roots to keep bacteria from adhering in the future. We also offer bone grafting to restore the jawbone tissue lost due to gum disease.
